What is involved in becoming a Reiki practitioner?
I'm not sure if it's secret, but I've always wondered. Do they show you how to direct the energy? Or the intention? Or do they do something to you that makes it possible for you to do Reiki? Do you have to take any vows? I'm just curious; I've had a lot of Reiki in my life and it seems simple, but if it was simple more people would do it.
Generally, to become a Reiki practitioner you take a class and get attunements for each level you choose to do.
Depending upon the teacher, they show you techniques as well as hand positions that are generally used for performing a Reiki session. This can vary from teacher to teacher.
An attunement is done to open one up to Reiki and to 'set' it into a person so that the flow will always be available to the person getting the attunement.
It is an intent based energy healing and enlightenment system.
You do not have to take any vows. It is not associated with any specific religion.
It really is simple. What is normally the problem is the cost that usually comes with Reiki attunements. This varies greatly and some charge quite a lot of money per attunement/level. There are a lot of Reiki Masters out there so you do have the ability to shop around for one that is right for you.
There are a variety of Reiki forms out now.
The most common seems to be Usui Reiki, which has 3 levels (some divide level 3 into two parts for those who are becoming Reiki Master/Teachers). I think this is always a good place to start as it is just working with the Reiki energy, not adding in any other healing energies.

It is simple, yes. But I think it is a matter of believing in it. Your belief makes it work or not? I am a non-believer but my mom is a huge believer, so it works for her but I refuse to take it at its face value. Probably the day I see the energy flowing with my own eyes I might turn into a believer, till then I keep my mouth shut and hear her do all sorts of chantings.

First off, the previous post made me think it's really important to state that Reiki is not religious in any way, and the chanting probably comes from her lifestyle rather than the reiki!
You have to have an attunement and a bit of teaching to learn how to use the energy once you start to feel it, and how to practise responsibly. It was described to me as being like a radio - the signal is around you all of the time, but you have switch on and tune in the radio in order to hear anything. In the same way, universal energy is around us all of the time, but you need to be attuned to it in order to be aware of it. The energy is flowing through your system right now, you just aren't aware of it yet.
There are three degrees - Shoden (first) where you learn how to channel universal energy (reiki) out of your hands; Okuden (second) where you learn to use the symbols to do the quantum physics thing and send reiki through time and space - you also learn to do "exorcisms" and similar too; and Master (third) where you learn to teach and attune other people.
It is really simple, but there are many things that stop people practising. First there are the sceptics, who don't want to be attuned. For some there's a financial implication - it's not hugely expensive, but varies greatly depending on where you go (I can recommend someone in the Brighton area if you're interested). Some people like to receive the treatment to pamper themselves but think it's too much hard work to be attuned. Some people expect there'll be a lot more to it than there is. You'd be amazed how many people are attuned but don't practise, as the insurance costs £100 a year and there isn't enough demand comercially (myself included).
You don't take any vows, and you don't even have to use it once you're attuned if you don't want to.
If I can help any more please feel free to email anytime

Reiki is not a Secret and every culture has a form of Reiki that they work with. It is not a religion nor anything to be afraid of. Reiki is a Japanese technique of applying and balancing the energy or electrical patterns in the body, mind and spirit. The body’s ability to heal physical aliments increases. Reiki also opens the mind to the necessity for taking responsibility for one’s life; to the joys of balance and wholeness.
Reiki is always present, but we are unaware of it until the contact is made throughout the attunement process. After this training, it can be received and converted into healing energy. Once you have been attuned to Reiki, you are permanently linked without the need of conscious alteration of the mind. Reiki initiations open certain inner centers of the body so that the energy can be channeled easily and safely.
By following the steps taught by a trained Reiki Master/Teacher, anyone is able to direct the energy of Reiki to meet individual needs. After the attunement, simply by placing your hands on yourself or someone else, the energy starts to flow throughout the individual. It fills you first and then flows out through your hands into the individual who is receiving the healing. Reiki is a tool for use at any moment, anytime, anywhere for on the spot stress and anxiety release, pain relief and quick energy. In short, Reiki is a holistic, self help technique for directing natural life energy. No special environment or equipment is needed. Reiki will enhance whatever talent a person has, helping them to become the best they can be with this energy force. Age makes no difference.
Reiki is harmless and cannot hurt anyone. It does not destroy, but builds and protects. It will vitalize all forms of life; plants, animals, fish, fowl, and human… from infants to old age. Reiki can do ONLY GOOD.

me, Reiki Master–various forms

Namaste. I am a Reiki Practitioner. Currently I am in transition ~ heading towards becoming a Reiki Seichim Master. For me it is simply practising the art of Reiki (on self & at the request of clients, friends & family) and following the Reiki Creed;
Just for today
do not anger -
Just for today
do not worry -
Just for today,
be humble
Just for today,
be honest in your work
Just for today,
Be compassionate to yourself and others
Earn you living honestly -
Show gratitude to every living thing.
When you 'find' your Reiki Master, she/he will at your request, initiate and attune you to the sacred ways. In my experience it has been attending a one on one workshop.
Reik is available to everyone. Although it is not for everyone. Some people resonate with it. Others cannot see/feel/hear the Reiki therefor are sceptical. And that's ok too.
It is not necessarily secret, but the sacredness of it is evident once a person becomes attuned.
The Direction of Reiki energy ~ Reiki goes where Reiki is needed. As a practioner of Reiki, I liken it to ~ I am a power cord, I plug into the Reiki energy and it flows through me into the person I am assisting. That person's body knows exactly where to direct the healing energy. I am assisting but not responsible for the healing. Each person is responsible for their own healing journey. I support. I don't take credit for it. I am aware that I play an important part in the 'big picture'.
Attunement to Reiki brings change.
You will know when you are ready. You will know because there will be no doubt. It will simply be a matter of ~ hay this is what I am going to do. And you will not 'talk' about it, you'll just do it ; ) OR you might decide it is not for you and persue other options. At the end of the day, you are supposed to be happy. So what ever makes your heart sing ~ is the right thing for you…
Good luck.
In Love & Light
